Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As an innovation leader, we look for ambitious, forward-thinking, open-minded, and well-rounded individuals to join our global team. Located in our Rochester Hills office, we are seeking an Electrical Motor and Pump Mechanical Engineer.

 

    • You’ll be working on research and development of new electro-mechanical products to meet market and customer needs in the area of electric pumps and motors.
    • This is an exciting opportunity for you because this position has primary design responsibility for the mechanical portion of the electric pumps and motors designs. 
    • Your fit in the organization will be reporting to the Global Technical and Product Line Director – Water Pumps.
    • The role’s responsibilities include research and development to optimize product performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability.   
    • You'll be responsible for the commercialization of new product designs to ensure successful product launches and participate in and provide technical support to commercialization teams.
    • Act as the primary technical contact for suppliers of the mechanical components including bearings, seals, impeller, volute etc, and the subject matter expert for these components for the corporation.   

Keys to Success

  • Provides progress reports on a weekly basis on key projects. 
  • Acts as development representative and technical expert to provide technical support on various cross-functional teams with manufacturing, purchasing, sales, and suppliers.
  • Provides recommendations on design strategy and other technical matters to senior management as well as technical guidance to lab technicians and less experienced engineers.
  • Needs to be a hands-on technical leader, willing to make initial proof of concept samples to understand design issues and react quickly to correct them.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No direct reports. Leads others to solve complex problems; uses analytical thinking, tools and judgement to identify innovative solutions.
  • Assists upper level management and staff as a technical specialist or advisor.
  • May lead teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity.

Requirements and Preferred Skills

  • BS Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8-10+ years of experience in the design of electric motors and or mechanical coolant pumps.
  • Able to adhere to ISO TS 16949, ISO 14001, HSE policy, VDA 6, GBLP/s, GPS, Lean Manufacturing, 6 Sigma, and any other industry standards in all activities.
  • Conduct face-to-face and online meetings with OEM engineering and purchasing staff, supplier engineering, and sales staff externally as well as Gates purchasing, manufacturing, sales, and quality staff internally.
  • Minimum travel, less than 5%, with most being day trips, in the Great Metro Detroit Area.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

  2. Bonus Eligible: 10%
