Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee the build of small‑run prototype assemblies in collaboration with product engineers, prototype builder, and the toolroom.
- Conduct functional and performance testing of prototype assemblies and accurately record results for engineering reviews.
- Perform packaging, labeling, and support product engineers with shipments to test facilities.
- Communicate with customers regarding prototype status, availability, delivery timelines, and handling instructions.
- Arrange transportation and logistics for prototype shipments to customer sites, ensuring proper packaging and documentation.
- Support the toolroom by managing the flow of raw materials, consumables, and expendable tooling required for prototype and assembly fixture work.
- Coordinate outbound shipments to secondary suppliers, including heat treat, coating, machining, and other specialty services.
- Track and monitor external supplier turnaround times to maintain project schedules.
- Provide feedback to engineering regarding assembly issues, test discrepancies, or opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain organized inventory and tracking systems for prototype components, tooling, and materials
Scope of Role
The Prototype Engineering Specialist is a hands‑on, detail‑oriented role supporting the development of prototype assemblies used in belt tensioners, idlers, e‑mobility transmissions, and electric water pumps for data‑center cooling systems. The position focuses on coordinating prototype builds, conducting and documenting performance evaluations, managing logistics with customers, and supporting the toolroom with materials and external supplier interactions. This role plays a key part in ensuring timely delivery, quality control, and smooth execution of prototype development activities.
Education and Experience
- 1-3 years of relevant experience
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
- Equivalent and relevant hands‑on experience with mechanical assembly, machining, fabrication, or testing can be accepted.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, tolerancing, and engineering drawings.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced development environment.
- Clear communication skills, including experience speaking with customers or suppliers.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit; use hands to reach, handle, manipulate, and feel objects, tools, and controls. The employee may be required to lift up to 7 kg packages and transport them via stairways or across the street for receiving or shipping. The employee must be able to listen and communicate effectively and use a computer regularly.
